you didn't think this was the kind of straight from the heart diary, with all my secrets and thoughts, did you?

made this page just to keep track of things i did to my box, discovery of new applications and such. just thought it would be fun to read sometime in the future. this is meant to entertain me, and me alone, but if you want to read on, please do.

reiserfs has been causing some trouble for me. but again i fixed it. my debian install is now 18 months old :) i love the fact that blackbox development is back at it's feet. many thanks to sean 'shaleh' perry and brad hughes for their efforts.
currently running kernel 2.4.18.

wow! time flies. running 2.4.17 kernel, maybe i should check out the new 2.5.x beta kernels some day. nothing much to report. i love the thought of new development in blackbox.

i also tried out the whitebox application. and i found out it was load of cowdroppings. i do not need gui to edit my menu, i like to use gui to make themes, but sad to say whitebox was useless with this purpose in mind. still some ok stuff with the root-image handler. but all and all, i run blackbox cause i like to use terminals for the most of my work. and i am not gnomified yet. and it would be nice if the fucking application really did save the changes i did to my menu.

been doing the walk through 2.4.11, 2.4.12 and 2.4.13, things looks good now. there is one thing that bugs me though. i must admit i haven't read up on it, but the thing is when you use a patch to go from 2.4.12 to 2.4.13, and you run make oldconfig, everything is sweet, except one thing. when you run uname -r you get #2, as in build #2 when you have one compiled the kernel once. and yes, i know i am picky. guess i have to find a solution to this if there is one.

i have tried out nautilus. it just died and died and died. not impressing at all.

pronto! is a sweet mailclient. but is has issues with attachments. so now i am giving balsa a try again. evolution is so big and bloathed. but it is good to have such an application to offer. even though the calendar functionality dies on my and won't even start now.

vim 6 is hardcore sweetness all the way.

i thought bbconf was rubbish. that's a pretty harsh statement. but it just was not my kind of application. i have tried the theme-builder functionality and i thought it was hard to use and just not what i want to use. i know the old toolbox is pretty full of crap to, but i prefer this to make my themes. i guess i have to take another look at it. and come up with some more constuctive feedback.

"holy diva - i'm a surviva - feeling like de niro in taxi driva"

i really thought my system was fucked up. ldconfig was killed by sigbus every time i ran it.
apt-get/dpkg depends on ldconfig during dist-upgrades and installation of packages. so i thought the only way out was to reinstall debian.
trying out different kernels and shit with no result. then tonight playing with reiserfsck, it is now back to normal. thank the almighty lord of unix.
now i have 80 new fresh packages waiting to come down in my dist-upgrade. :)
nothing much else new. gonna check out bbconf tonight. give you a report on that later on.

been testing sylpheed, a rather sweet mail-client (gui). threaded news and mail. also support gpg.
i need to check out slrn some day (console news reader).

games under linux is not what is used to be. downloaded kohan: immortal sovereigns and i really like the way loki has setup things with the loki_update functionality and such. just fire up loki_update and grab a demo you would like to check out, it also supports resume for those big downloads.

abiword is a sweet word processor too. that about covers everything for now.

2.4.9 is up and running. nothing else of importance to report. :)

my main problem lately has been my isdn card. finished building kernel 2.4.8 and i could not get online, due to hisax problems. solving the problem was easy, thanks to my comrade audun. had to do a 'pnpdump - c > /etc/isapnp.conf' and then add a line i had removed from the dialup script i used. so now it works then. i now know where things are in kernel 2.4.8 at least. :)

now i no longer have a problem with dri and games under x 4.1.0 either. guess i had just fucked up under my last kernelbuild (2.4.7). a note to all of you with kernel 2.4.8, dri in 2.4.8 will only work with x 4.1.0.

no other new found sweet software to report. i think playing chromium is pretty fun though. check it out here .

the last couple of days i have been troubled with galeon and gconf. this problem has finally been solved. and i love the sweetness of galeon. with mozilla 0.9.3 it is fast and stable.

still x is fscking things up with games. can't really spot the problem either. tore looked at it today, but we got no closer to a solution. gotta read some more x 4.1.0 documentation. probably someone else with the same problem out there.

last night geir torstein found a fscking great ftp client called yafc (it's under my recommended page). i didn't know ncftp was not GPL, so apt-get remove ncftp ans apt-get install yafc. and it's so much better than ncftp too. real sweetheart. thank you geir torstein :)

me and geir torstein talked about old amiga games the other day, and geir torstein told me about uae (unix amiga emulator). so much fun to play good old stuntcar racer, but this time on my linux machine.

i am working on how to get gpg to work with pronto. guess i have to bite the dust and go for mutt on this one, but it would be kind of cool to get it working with pronto.

well guess that's about it for now.
